Northern Rivers Trains for the Future Inc. TOOT (Trains On Our Tracks) Campaign

MEDIA RELEASE: 21 Oct 2007

Time For Feds To Invest In Our Rail

TOOT organisers today called on both major parties to commit to restoring rail services and get on with building a link to Queensland.

‘Its time for the government to invest some of the budget surplus in rail, ’ said TOOT spokesperson Karin Kolbe.

‘There is a very strong feeling in the community that more money needs to be spent on infrastructure and services.’

‘There is also a very firm view across the region that commuter rail services and a rail link to Queensland are appropriate to the needs of the community and provide a broad spread of economic, social and environmental benefits.’

‘These community views are contained in hundreds of letters from residents to both parties that we have collected from the voters of Richmond and Page.’

Voters Tell Parties: “We Want Trains” TOOT has written to the leaders of both parties as well all candidates in Richmond and Page seeking their commitment to get trains on our tracks and a link to Queensland.

‘We are now inviting the public to have a say as well and send personalised messages to both parties,’ said Karin Kolbe, TOOT Spokesperson.

‘The initial response has been very strong.’

‘We’ve collected over five hundred letters in the last few days and expect many thousands to come in over the next few weeks.’

‘People should look out for TOOT stalls and other events or go to www.toot.org.au.’

Letters collected by TOOT will be presented to local candidates for forwarding to Transport Minister Vaile and Shadow Transport Minister Ferguson.

Voter Letters to be Presented to Deputy PM, Mark Vaile

TOOT organisers are hoping to be able to present letters from the voters of Richmond and Page directly to the Federal Transport Minister when he visits Tweed on Monday 22 October.
