'Listen to your North Coast Members', TOOT tells NRMA President

TOOT and many long time members of the NRMA today called on the motoring services group to adopt a more balanced approach to funding a safe transport system in our region.

TOOT and NRMA members met the NRMA President, Alan Evans and Northern Region Director, Wendy Machin at St Helena for a frank conversation.

TOOT spokesperson, Karin Kolbe said today,

'The NRMA should be representing the views of all members.'

'Significant numbers of North Coast members do not support the current NRMA push to upgrade the Pacific Highway without considering the needs of regional communities.'

'Problems with safety, congestion and amenity are increasing in our communities due to a lack of investment in alternative transport options in our region.'

'Currently the NRMA's sole focus on the Pacific Highway is undermining community efforts to obtain funding for a more balanced transport system that includes rail.'

‘The Northern Rivers is unique in terms of population, tourism numbers and the existence of rail infrastructure that is within 5km of 86% of Byron and Lismore LGA residents.

'Pouring more money into roads without developing alternatives does not make roads safer and can lead to local roads becoming more congested and dangerous.'

‘A tiny fraction of the road budget would make an enormous difference to other options.’

"NRMA members, TOOT and other community groups would like to work with the NRMA to bring about a safer and more efficient transport system for our region, one that includes rail.'

'We look forward to a positive response from the NRMA on future visits to our region.'
