MEDIA RELEASE: 19 June 2007

Budget again fails to get Northern Rivers back on track

Commenting on today’s NSW State Budget, Basil Cameron, spokesperson for TOOT, the campaign to restore rail services to the Northern Rivers, said:

“Rail infrastructure and planning for rural NSW have again been left out of the NSW budget.

“Despite mounting evidence of the need for commuter trains on the Casino-Murwillumbah line to address social, economic and environmental issues, there is not even any money to start planning for a better transport system for the Northern Rivers.

“Voters made their support for trains on the Casino-Murwillumbah line very clear at the recent election.

“Commuter trains running regularly on the rail network within our region have the greatest potential to provide fast, safe public transport while returning many environmental and economic benefits to our communities.
